Only those who are in the industry would be familiar with the term Metal Stamping and the Deep-Drawn process
What exactly is metal stamping?
This is really a term that is used with reference to various press forming operations including coining, embossing, blanking, and pressing. There are a few very common operations that are associated with the process of stamping and these include: blanking, piercing, forming, and drawing.
There is a dedicated tool that is used to do these operations and this tool is known as hard tooling. This is a tool that has been specifically designed to make high volume parts of one configuration of part design.
There is also a tool known as soft tooling and this is used in processes like CNC turret presses, laser profilers, and press brakes. But, soft tooling can be easily modified or adjusted.
What is the process of Deep Drawn Pressings?
This is a process in which flat rolled steel is used to make drawn parts. This is a kind of metal processing and the parts in the process are formed mechanically or in a pre-determined form called die.
The parts that are produced in this process are from blanks. In this process, the sheet metal is pushed from a reel or single blanks, through multiple positions.
As a result of this process, parts of various shapes like circular, rectangular or a more complex shape can be formed.
The types of metals that are used in this process
The metals that are usually used in this process include: Nickel, Specialty Alloys, Aluminium, HRS, Iron Nickel, Tungsten, Metal, Silver, Nickel Silver, Alloy, Copper, Kovar, CRS, Bronze, Invar, Mu Metal, Cold Rolled Steel, Brass, Molybdenum and Stainless Steel.
Metal preswork are produced from a array of ferrous and non ferrous stuffs including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper s, depending on particular buyer requirements. distinctive metal presswork product practical application include use within the automotive, building construction, electrical and healthcare markets among others, but the possibilities for final product application are almost endless.
Various parts produced
As a result of this deep-drawn process, it is possible to cold-form a blank into a pre-determined form. Various types of parts can be produced from steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminium and a variety of other alloys.
Most of the metallic products that you see in your daily life, come from a process called metal pressing or metal press work. There are two methods of metal pressing, people either do it with their own hands or this kind of heavy pressing is done with special machines. There are fixed shaped dies available that help the manufacturers of metal stamping to create many different shapes from metal sheets. Normally the products that are produced with metal pressing are lot stronger than usual products produced by ordinary methods. There is reproduction of same shapes also possible with metal pressing and there are lots of shapes that manufacturers make.
It is not necessary to cut the metallic sheets to create different shapes instead you can also create shapes within that sheet by using geometric dies. To save times as well as money, you can also place multiple metallic sheets and cut them at the same time. This process will yield number of copies of same design but in less time. This process is used mostly for steel and other alloys because productivity is increased a lot with this process and it also lowers the overall cost of stamping.
Metal stamping is not only for steel stamping but aluminum stamping is also very feasible and cost effective process. There is lot of machinery that uses aluminum stamping like engines, cars and other heavy machinery as well and aluminum stamping is preferred in these machines because aluminum is lot more stable and stronger than other metal alloys. Manufacturers use this process of stamping on all kinds of metals like alloy steel, copper, brass and others to create very different kinds of shapes. Steel stamping is used mostly in aerospace and other automotive industries.
There is another type of metal pressing also done and that is called deep drawn pressing. Deep drawn pressings always use a very thin sheet of metal and this thin sheet is placed inside an automated machine with lots of dies. These dies cut that thin sheet in different predefined shapes. Flat metal sheets are used for deep drawn pressings because the dies that are used in this process do not cut the metal. All different types of alloy sheets that include, brass, steel, aluminum as well as combination of these metals are also used for this process.
There are many useful products that are produced with this process and deep drawn pressings are the most useful ones. Deep drawn pressings are considered the best because these are very durable, reliable and cost effective. You can either create one single piece with deep drawn pressings or it can be used to create replica of one shape very easily and in quick succession of time.
Mostly people think that technologies of metal pressings and deep drawn pressings are used for big industries like making machines for different car factories but there are some small industries also available that use these technologies. There are many steel stamping companies that are into very mundane production like cups, batteries and lots of other decorative items as well. These companies create everything using metal press work and deep drawn pressings.
When you create seamless metal components you are performing a process called deep draw pressing. This process allows you to create parts that have in the past been made by other methods such as assembly or casting. This form of metal pressing is preferred over some of the traditional methods. There are many parts that can be made with this type of pressing method. Here are some benefits of this process:
• Fewer materials are used, which reduces cost and waste.
• This method can produce complex designs. Other methods are not capable of this without added costs of other operations.
• The quality of this method is better and you can repeat the process with production batches easier.
Where These Components are Used
Deep draw pressing is used in everything from large enclosures to catheter holders. This process creates components that are cylindrical, square, or rectangle. These items can be made to be quite versatile. Due to the number of parts that can be made, deep drawn pressing has many uses. Common items for the home made with this procedure include:
• lipstick tubes / cosmetics containers
• asthma inhalers
• metal pen lids
• metal ball point pen refills
• “widgets” in beer cans
• Plumbing and heating fittings.
Most of the metal stamping manufacturers use; brass, aluminum, stainless steel, copper, and other metals are for deep drawn pressing process. The metal needs to be ductile so there’s’ no stress which might lead to weakness or cracks with the finished component
There’s a series of geometric dies created and installed on the press. A component is passed through the press and pressed into each die. Once completed the final shape is done. Usually 60 parts can be done in one minute.
Another type of process similar to deep drawn pressing is called progressive die pressing. This can only create shallow components however. These metal sheets are used instead of blanks. Progression pressing can create about 250 parts per minute.
When Are deep Drawn Pressing Components Used?
When you have large amounts of components to make then deep drawn pressing is a very affordable option to use. One you have installed the dies on the deep drawn press the processing of marking parts is mechanical in nature. You can reduce unit costs by about 85% when you use deep drawn pressing and nor parts that are done by regular machine pressing. This type of pressing is great for low retail price items when you need a very high level of items made.
